Waste and recycling

The municipality is responsible for collecting and managing waste, as well as emptying sludge from private wastewater systems. To ensure that waste can be recycled or treated correctly, you need to sort it and leave it at the right place.

Source separation will soon be introduced

Waste management is developing, and source separation (närsortering) will be introduced in Krokom. This means that, in the future, packaging of paper and plastic will be collected near your home instead of being taken to a recycling station (återvinningsstation).

Customers using underground waste containers can start sorting their waste at source already now. The new waste bins for houses will begin to be delivered in autumn 2027. Shared sorting areas (sorteringsplatser) for holiday homes will start to be built in 2026 and will be developed gradually.

During a transition period, households can continue to use the recycling stations.

Sort your waste

Sort your waste

When you sort your waste, the main principle is that everything that can be recycled should be sorted out. Packaging, newspapers, hazardous waste, bulky waste and electronic waste must therefore not be placed in your waste bin.

What remains after sorting is called residual waste (restavfall) and should be placed in your waste bin at home. Currently you can also dispose of food waste in the residual waste bin. Make sure the bag is properly tied.

You may only use the waste bins provided by the municipality. Food waste and residual waste are collected by the municipality and transported for treatment, where they are turned into energy, such as heat and fuel, and into products like fertiliser.

Packaging made of plastic, paper, glass and metal, as well as newspapers, should be taken to a recycling station. These stations are intended for households. Small electronic waste, batteries and light bulbs can be taken to a recycling station or placed in collection cabinets in some shops.

Recycling centre (återvinningscentral)

Waste that requires special handling should be taken to a recycling centre. The recycling centre are intended for households in Krokoms munipacity. There you can dispose of, for example, bulky waste, hazardous waste, electronic waste, construction waste and garden waste.

You sort your waste yourself in the correct container, and unsorted waste is not accepted. Waste must be left loose or in transparent bags, as the contents must be visible.

At the recycling centre in Krokom, you can also leave items for reuse.

Sludge emtying

Sludge emtying

Only the contractor appointed by the municipality may carry out this service. Emptying takes place according to a schedule or on request, and the system must be accessible and meet current requirements.

Waste from buinesses

Waste from buinesses

The municipality collects food waste and residual waste from businesses. However, retail businesses are responsible for managing all of their waste themselves from july 2026.

Packaging must be handled through designated systems for businesses and not taken to recycling stations. In some cases, smaller amounts of waste can be taken to a recycling centre for a fee.

In some cases a business can share waste solution with households (samlokalisering), specific conditions apply and the waste management solution must be approved by the municipality.

Waste from tourists (temporary stay)

Waste from tourists (temporary stay)

If you are staying in the municipality temporarily, for example as a tourist or visitor, the same basic rule applies as for residents: you must sort your waste and leave it in the correct location.

As a tourist, you should primarily leave your packaging at a recycling station. For food waste and residual waste, you buy a prepaid sack from one of the municipality’s agents and return it when it is full.

If you rent a cabin, Airbnb, or stay at a campsite, you must sort food waste, residual waste, and packaging according to the instructions provided on site. The property owner is responsible for ensuring that information is available and that you have a place to leave your waste.

Bulky waste or hazardous waste must be taken to a recycling centre, and a fee applies.
